5 Places You Shouldn’t Miss on the Colombian Caribbean Coast

October 26, 2018, 3:54 pm

The Caribbean Coast region of Colombia is one of the most popular destinations for travellers and tourists visiting Colombia. There are various arguments to why this is so, but perhaps the climate, landscape (think beautiful beaches, palm trees, etc...), and historical sites have something to do with it. In this post, we want to share 5 places on the Caribbean Coast that we consider are "must sees" during anyone's tour to this region of Colombia.

1. The Walled City and Historic Centre of Cartagena

We have mentioned the walled city of Cartagena in previous posts, but it goes without saying that it is a place not to be missed during your tour along the Caribbean Coast. The walled city is probably the most iconic symbol of Cartagena and the Caribbean Coast in general. It boasts an incredibly unique atmosphere that combines the historic elements of the colonial walls, architecture, and museums with the new and modern restaurants and boutiques scattered throughout the area. Even if you only have time to walk around the walls of the city, make sure this is on your list of places to see!

2. Islas del Rosario

While Cartagena is famous for the walled city and its historic centre, there is an archipelago nearby that deserves equal recognition: the Islas del Rosario. The Islas del Rosario is a beautiful archipelago that is home to some of the best sites for observing coral and tropical fish along the Caribbean Coast. A nice escape from the city-scene and a short boat ride from Cartagena, these islands are a site not to be missed.

3. Parque Tayrona (Tayrona National Park)

Parque Tayrona continues to be one of the best-loved and most-visited national natural park in Colombia. Parque Tayrona is home to some of the most beautiful and rugged beaches in Colombia, and lies at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, which provides an incredible and surreal backdrop to this tropical escape. While the beaches are most often portrayed as the highlight of this national park, there are also some amazing hikes and trails to be discovered in the tropical jungles of the Sierra Nevada that will lead you to indigenous communities as well as to la Ciudad Perdida, the Colombian "Machu Picchu."

4. Cabo de la Vela and Punta Gallinas

While many Colombians still consider the department of La Guajira to be the "wild wild west" of Colombia, more and more tourists and Colombians alike are discovering the astounding natural beauty of this department. Cabo de la Vela and Punta Gallinas are perhaps the best and most well known examples of the incredible natural beauty of La Guajira. Both Cabo de la Vela and Punta Gallinas offer a once in a lifetime experience. In both places, you'll be surrounded by desert landscape and magical beaches protected by the Wayuu community (the largest indigenous group in Colombia). You will likely stay in a traditional Wayuu structure and you will taste some of the best and freshest golden snapper you've ever had. Not to mention, by visiting Punta Gallinas you'll have the right to boast that you've been to the northern most tip of the South American continent!

5. Minca

Minca is a destination much different from those mentioned above. Minca is a "cool" escape from the traditional and typical heat and humidity of the Caribbean Coast. Minca is a small town situated in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, and is known for its coffee, waterfalls, and beautiful hikes through the tropical jungle of the Sierra Nevada. Minca is the perfect place to take a short break from the Caribbean heat, and to get reenergized before more demanding travel excursions!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Nidia Penagos

Nidia started Uncover Colombia after feeling the tug to promote her native country through a positive perspective. What better way to do that than showing visitors the beauty and diversity of her homeland? She was well-aware Colombia didn’t have the best reputation and she wanted to change that. So in 2012, with the help of her Colombian husband and close group of friends, she laid the foundation to build a Colombian tour operator that offers unique adventures, safe experiences and utilises local knowledge on each and every tour.
