Day 1 Arrive in Santa Marta

Arrive at any time and meet our team at the airport for a comfortable transfer to your hotel in Santa Marta. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes, depending on traffic.

Known as “The Pearl of America”, Santa Marta is the oldest city in Colombia, founded in 1525, and one of the most fascinating destinations on the country’s Caribbean coast. Surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, it is the gateway to Tayrona National Natural Park and a region rich in nature, culture and indigenous heritage.

Settle into your beachfront accommodation and enjoy your first taste of the relaxed Caribbean atmosphere before beginning your Santa Marta adventure.

Day 2 Day trip to Tayrona Park – Cabo San Juan

Today, we will spend the day at Tayrona National Natural Park, where we will see some of Colombia's most beautiful beaches. Early in the morning, we will start the trip to Tayrona Park, which will take only 15 minutes from your hotel to the main entrance of the park (El Zaino entrance). We will drive 10 min more from the entrance to the Cañaveral sector and from there, we will walk for about 1 hour across the forest until reaching the Arrecifes sector, where you will get great panoramic views of the park. Then, we will walk for 30 min more to reach the beaches Arenillas, La Piscina and El Cabo San Juan. You will have plenty of time to swim and relax on the beach. There are several restaurants and bars in the park where you can stop for lunch in the shade, relax, and admire the spectacular surroundings.

Around 3:30pm, we will start the journey back to the main entrance.

Note: Tayrona Park is usually closed from Feb 1st to 15th, Jun 1st to 15th and Oct 19th to Nov 2nd.

Day 3 Visit Katanzama: Arhuaco Indigenous Community Experience

Early in the morning, we will depart for the small community of Perico Aguao, located about 45 minutes from Tayrona National Natural Park. Upon arrival, we will be welcomed by a local guide and begin a gentle walk (approximately 2 km / 25 minutes) to the Arhuaco settlement of Katanzama.

Here, we will enjoy an immersive three-hour cultural experience, learning about the agricultural activities of the Arhuaco community, including their cacao cultivation, which is part of a growing project aimed at exporting to Japan to support the sustainability of the community. We will also discover their traditional lifestyle, dress, and customs.

Our hosts will explain the ancestral importance of the “poporo,” a sacred gourd used in the spiritual practice of mambeo with coca leaves. During the visit, we will observe traditional weaving of the renowned Arhuaco bags, visit the local school, explore sacred sites, and appreciate the nearby sea, which holds deep significance in their cosmovision. Visiting Katanzama offers a respectful introduction to a different way of life, allowing travellers to connect with Arhuaco culture, community-based tourism and the natural landscapes of Santa Marta beyond the traditional tourist routes.

After the visit, we will walk back to the vehicle and return to the hotel.

Day 4 Relax by the Caribbean: Beachfront Stay Near Tayrona National Park

Enjoy a slower pace during a full day dedicated to relaxation by the Caribbean. Stay close to the sea at your beachfront accommodation and take time to enjoy the surrounding coastline, with the option to relax on Playa Los Naranjos, near the mouth of the Río Piedras and close to the eastern edge of Tayrona National Natural Park.
Swim in the warm Caribbean waters, enjoy the peaceful beach surroundings or simply unwind with the sea just steps from your accommodation. This unhurried day is designed to experience the natural beauty and laid-back atmosphere of the Colombian Caribbean at your own pace.

Day 5 Travel to Cartagena,from the Caribbean Coast to the Walled City

We’ll pick you up from your hotel in the morning to begin our journey to Cartagena. Along the way, sit back, relax and take in the stunning Caribbean landscapes. The drive takes approximately 4.5 hours, with opportunities to stop for a snack, a drink or simply to stretch your legs and enjoy the scenery.

Upon arrival, you will be dropped off at your hotel in Cartagena or at the airport, depending on your travel plans. If you would like to extend your Colombian Caribbean adventure, you can also add one of our Cartagena experiences or private tours to your journey.

The Pure Essence of Cartagena

We did the La Boquilla Fishing Village and African Drum Workshop. Sofia and Juan picked us up from our hotel and we took a drive to La Boquilla. We rode the canoes through the mangroves and learned to fish with a net and set crab traps with Señor Juan. We then went to the drum workshop and worked with some amazingly talented young people who introduced various musical styles and different types of drums. We played and danced and they truly made us feel like we were part of the family. I would recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in diving into the culture of Cartagena, and spending time face to face with the guardians of their craft and environment.
