What to Expect

Detailed Itinerary

Departure Time: 5 am

Our day begins early, with a 5:00 a.m. departure from your hotel, when bird activity is at its peak. Upon arrival, the vehicle will take us to a nearby access point, followed by a short uphill walk of approximately 200 meters to reach the reserve.

Once inside, we will explore accessible forest trails at a relaxed pace, taking time to listen for bird calls, observe different forest habitats, and photograph birds in their natural surroundings. The Andean forest provides opportunities to look for hummingbirds, tanagers, antpittas, wood-warblers, and other species associated with the highland forests of Colombia.

Among the target species we may look for are Southern Emerald-Toucanet, Sparkling Violetear, Green Violetear, Tourmaline Sunangel, Collared Inca, Buff-winged Starfrontlet, Grass-green Tanager, Chestnut-crowned Antpitta, Blackish Tapaculo, Rufous Spinetail, Gray-breasted Wood-Wren, Plain-colored Seedeater, Chestnut-capped Brushfinch, and Black-crested Warbler. The reserve can be especially rewarding for birders interested in hummingbirds and the diverse families that make the birds of Colombia so appealing to international birdwatchers.

The experience also offers opportunities to search for some of the region's most sought-after Andean birds, including endemic and range-restricted species where conditions and recent sightings allow. For bird photographers, the peaceful setting, forest trails, and concentration of birdlife provide valuable opportunities to observe behavior and capture images without the crowds found at more urban destinations.

The Pure Essence of Cartagena

We did the La Boquilla Fishing Village and African Drum Workshop. Sofia and Juan picked us up from our hotel and we took a drive to La Boquilla. We rode the canoes through the mangroves and learned to fish with a net and set crab traps with Señor Juan. We then went to the drum workshop and worked with some amazingly talented young people who introduced various musical styles and different types of drums. We played and danced and they truly made us feel like we were part of the family. I would recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in diving into the culture of Cartagena, and spending time face to face with the guardians of their craft and environment.
