Scouting trip to La Guajira

Posted in Blog

Greetings!

Frequent readers might have noticed that we have been away from the keyboard for the last few weeks.

But we have not been idle; whilst our team in London joined the Olympic party and attended the events organised by the Colombian office of tourism at the Natgeo Store in Knightsbridge and around the city (check this video of the flash mob at Westfield's Shopping Mall courtesy of Colombia Travel), the guys in Colombia were hard at work making good progress on the preparations to launch our first tours this year. However, as you will see further down in this post, it is debatable which part of the team has had the best summer so far.

On a separate but related note, our website is also fast approaching completion and we might even be able to let you have a sneaky peak in advance… watch this space.

In summary, everything is progressing well and we are very excited to have received so much support from almost every one we come across and tell about Uncover Colombia. We continue our preparations behind the scenes to provide you with an alternative way of exploring Colombia as a very new and exciting destination and our foremost objective is that if you decide to visit Colombia with us, you have an enjoyable and long-lasting experience.

But going back to the topic, while the team in London was enjoying the atmosphere and supporting the Colombian athletes at the Olympics, our ground team in Colombia was on the road again, this time exploring possible destinations for the portion of our tours that will cover the north of Colombia. Will you trade Olympics in London for two weeks in the Caribbean? We think it’s almost a tie.

We covered many locations and took quite a lot of photos during the two-week trip, perhaps too much for a single blog post. So this time we will focus on our adventure at the north-most point of Colombia.

The region of La Guajira with its desert and almost alien landscapes and the proud heritage and traditions of its indigenous inhabitants (the ‘Wayuu’) is one of the most remote places you can visit in Colombia.

We set camp at Riohacha, the capital of La Guajira, and from there we explored the key destinations in the area, spending one night at Cabo de la Vela, documented as the first point in the South American continent where an European laid foot (the credit goes to Alonso de Ojeda back in 1499). It might be fair to say that things in this place have not changed that much from the time Don Alonso stopped by looking for gold and a route to India. If you are looking for a truly remote place where you can be one with the sea and just contemplate the world around you, this might be the place for you.

The other places visited were UribiaManaure (a town focused on salt production), the Sanctuary of flora and fauna of “Los Flamencos” (“The Flamingos”) and several beautiful landmarks and viewpoints around the area.

Since an image is worth a thousand words, It is probably best to let you have a look at some of the photos we took in this part of the trip so you can judge by yourself. Let us know if you like what you see.

- Would you like us to include La Guajira as part of our the destinations in our tours?

- Have you been to La Guajira? Let us know about your experience.

As usual, we would love to read your comments and ideas.

Until next time,

The Uncover Colombia Team.
